Peter grew up in Dulwich, South London where he quit his job as a surveyor to pursue acting at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Peter worked the worked at the repertory theatre in Worthing, Sussex before appearing in his first Hollywood production The Man in the Iron Mask (1939). Cushing won roles in a number of films such as Vigil in the Night (1940) and Hamlet (1948) before returning to England where he spent much of the 1950s on both the big and small screens.

Cushing was cast as Grand Moff Tarkin in George Lucas’ Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977), once again playing a sinister Empire leader opposite the villainous Darth Vader. Sadly, he was unable to reprise his role in Lucas’ sequels after he was blown up while remaining on the Death Star, which Luke Skywalker destroyed
